In years gone by, the midwife (from the Latin words "with woman") was WITH the birthing mother in every sense of the word... physically, emotionally and spiritually. Today, with midwives needing to contend with bureaucracy and medical matters, it often becomes the doula who fills that role of being present and attentive to the birthing mother's every need.
Aside from techniques, tips, manoeuvres and massages the doula fills the all important role of being 100% present, positively supporting, encouraging and trusting the birthing process.
 

As a doula it is vital to be tuned in to the specific needs of any particular woman. Some like physical touch, some prefer words of support, some enjoy music, and some need silence.

A doula's job is to gently support this process, not blocking it in any way. Every woman we encounter is on HER unique journey. We feel humble in the knowledge that we have little if any idea of where her unique spiritual or emotional challenge lies.

As a birth supporter, we support, but cannot control. We empower women with our belief that the birthing mother has been given the ability to get through this journey, and convey strength to her through our trust and belief.

No matter how much we know about birth in general, we know nothing about the specifics of any birth upfront. We must allow every birth to transpire with its own uniqueness and in it's own way.  We must be willing to let the adventure unfold with patience and trust!
 

This task is a holy one and calls for constant self reflection to be worthy of meeting this calling. At the same time it is incredibly fulfilling and exciting to a part of this meaningful life-changing voyage.
